A primary healthcare centre in Ubaha, Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State, has reportedly remained abandoned years after it was severely damaged by fire during the insecurity that affected the area in 2023.
The development was raised by accountability organisation TrackaNG following a monitoring visit to Acharaba Obibiochasi Primary Health Centre, where the group said it found the facility in a deplorable condition.
According to TrackaNG, the healthcare centre has not been reconstructed since the fire incident and is now overgrown with bushes, with damaged walls and sections of the building without roofing.
The organisation said the continued abandonment of the facility is affecting residents who depend on primary healthcare services.
“Years later, it remains abandoned, unreconstructed and overgrown with bushes, with damaged walls and sections without roofing,” TrackaNG stated.
The organisation further disclosed that residents currently receive treatment in a community hall because the original health centre is no longer functional.
TrackaNG expressed concern that residents should not be left without access to a properly equipped primary healthcare facility for years, particularly because primary health centres provide essential medical services to communities.
The accountability group called on the relevant authorities to urgently intervene and commence the reconstruction of the facility.
It specifically appealed to the offices of Pastor Chris Mbarie and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, as well as the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, to take action to restore the facility.
“We urge your offices, National Primary Health Care Development Agency and Federal Ministry of Health in Nigeria, to urgently facilitate the reconstruction of this PHC and restore access to quality healthcare for the people of Orlu,” the organisation said.
The situation has renewed concerns about abandoned and damaged healthcare infrastructure in communities across Nigeria, where residents can be forced to rely on inadequate alternatives when public health facilities become unusable.
TrackaNG’s intervention forms part of its broader campaign for improved healthcare infrastructure, accountability and access to functional primary healthcare facilities across the country.
