Discontent is brewing within the Nigeria Police Force as officers from the 2018 recruitment intake have formally petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over what they describe as an unjust delay in promotion and widening salary disparities.
In a letter dated April 15, 2026, addressed to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the affected officers called for urgent intervention to correct what they termed a significant administrative lapse affecting their careers and welfare.
The officers explained that although they were due for promotion under standard timelines, their advancement was only implemented on May 23, 2023—about eleven months behind schedule. According to them, this delay has had lasting consequences on their salaries, allowances, and overall career progression.
“We have served diligently and meritoriously since enlistment, demonstrating loyalty and professionalism in line with the core values of the Force,” the petition read.
Despite their years of service, the officers say their progression has been unfairly stalled compared to other intakes, leading to financial imbalances that continue to affect their livelihoods.
The aggrieved personnel stressed that promotions in the police structure are directly tied to earnings and benefits, making the delay not just a procedural issue but a serious welfare concern.
“This situation has negatively impacted our morale, financial stability, and career growth,” they stated.
As part of their demands, the officers urged the police leadership to:
- Adjust their promotion dates to reflect the appropriate timeline
- Direct the police accounts department to implement corresponding salary corrections
- Pay all outstanding arrears resulting from the delay
The petition was also copied to senior officials, including the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Finance and Administration.
While reaffirming their loyalty to the Force, the officers expressed hope that their appeal would receive swift and fair consideration.
“We remain disciplined and committed to national service, and we trust in the leadership to address this matter with urgency,” they added.
The development highlights growing concerns over welfare and administrative efficiency within the police system, as calls for reforms continue to mount.
