The Kano State House of Assembly has passed a new amendment aimed at strengthening government oversight of private schools by requiring official approval before any increase in tuition or other school charges.
The legislation, known as the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board (Amendment) Bill, 2026, was approved during Monday’s plenary session after lawmakers adopted the report of the House Committee on Education.
Under the new law, private and voluntary educational institutions across Kano State will no longer be permitted to increase school fees without first obtaining approval from the relevant regulatory authorities. The measure is intended to protect parents and guardians from arbitrary fee hikes while promoting transparency and accountability in the private education sector.
The amendment also establishes the position of an Executive Secretary to oversee the administration of the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board, a move expected to improve the board’s efficiency and regulatory capacity.
Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Ismail Falgore, commended lawmakers for their contributions throughout the legislative process, describing the amendment as a significant step toward improving the regulation and management of private educational institutions in the state.
According to the Assembly, the legislation followed extensive consultations with education stakeholders and public hearings conducted by the House Committee on Education before the bill was debated and passed.
The new law is expected to provide greater protection for parents, ensure fairer school fee policies, and strengthen government oversight of private schools operating in Kano State.
