The Northern Reconciliation Group (NRG) has declared the worsening insecurity across Northern Nigeria a national security emergency, warning that persistent attacks, kidnappings, and banditry are pushing communities to the brink and threatening the region’s social stability.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the non-partisan group said rural and semi-urban communities across the North are experiencing repeated violent assaults, leaving residents trapped in fear, mourning lost loved ones, and struggling with displacement and the destruction of livelihoods.
The NRG expressed solidarity with victims and affected communities, noting that the unrelenting nature of the violence has moved beyond isolated incidents to become both a humanitarian crisis and a grave danger to social cohesion in the region.
According to the group, safeguarding human life and dignity remains the most basic responsibility of governance. It stressed that the scale and persistence of the insecurity must no longer be downplayed or treated as localised challenges.
“The continuing violence across Northern Nigeria constitutes a regional and national security emergency that demands urgent, coordinated, and humane responses,” the statement said.
The NRG called on security authorities to intensify lawful, intelligence-driven operations to secure the release of abducted persons and dismantle criminal networks operating across state and regional borders. It also urged the swift deployment of enhanced security measures and effective early-warning systems aimed at protecting vulnerable communities.
Beyond security operations, the group emphasized the importance of justice, accountability, and community-led solutions to rebuild trust between citizens and state institutions, warning that military responses alone would not deliver lasting peace.
Making its appeal in what it described as a spirit of unity and shared responsibility, the NRG said human security must rise above political, ethnic, or social divisions, urging leaders at all levels to act decisively.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to supporting peace-building initiatives through inclusive dialogue, with the goal of restoring safety, dignity, and sustainable peace across Northern Nigeria.
