A wave of outrage has followed a deadly attack in Plateau State after gunmen killed five members of a family, including a pregnant woman, in a late-night assault on Mbwelle village in Bokkos Local Government Area.
The incident was strongly condemned by Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, a cleric with the Church of Christ in Nations, who described the killings as brutal and deeply disturbing.
According to Dachomo, the attack occurred on the night of April 9, 2026, and lasted for nearly two hours, leaving residents in shock and grief.
He alleged that the assailants, suspected to be armed Fulani militants, launched the assault from a nearby settlement and operated without any immediate resistance from security forces.
“The attackers struck around 9:00 pm, opening fire as families prepared to sleep. Panic spread quickly as gunshots echoed across the village,” he said.
Survivor accounts indicate that the gunmen had strategically positioned themselves along escape routes, targeting fleeing residents. Those who remained indoors were also attacked, including a pregnant woman who was killed alongside her unborn child.
Witnesses further reported that the attackers used both firearms and machetes during the assault, allegedly chanting religious slogans as they carried out the killings.
Dachomo expressed concern over the lack of timely intervention, noting that military personnel were stationed less than three kilometres from the scene but did not respond during the attack.
He also raised questions over developments after the incident, claiming that a military gun truck linked to “Operation Enduring Peace” was later seen stationed near the settlement where the attackers reportedly retreated.
According to local accounts, the assailants were traced to a nearby settlement identified as Korong, described by residents as one of several areas allegedly occupied by armed groups posing threats to surrounding communities.
The cleric called for urgent action, demanding accountability and improved security measures to prevent further bloodshed in the region.
The attack adds to growing insecurity concerns in Plateau State, where communities have continued to experience recurring violence.
