The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has escalated following the reopening of its national secretariat in Abuja by the Nigeria Police Force and the subsequent handover of control to a faction aligned with Nyesom Wike.
The development, which unfolded on Saturday, marks a major turning point in the prolonged leadership tussle within the party, further widening the divide between rival factions.
The reopened headquarters, Wadata Plaza, alongside the party’s presidential campaign office—Legacy House in Maitama—had remained sealed since November 2025 following violent clashes between opposing camps.
Confirming the development, factional National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed, through the party’s spokesman Jungudo Mohammed, stated that the police acted in compliance with valid court orders.
He disclosed that the facilities have now been handed over to the Mohammed-led National Working Committee, with Samuel Anyanwu recognised as National Secretary.
Describing the move as a victory for due process, Mohammed commended the police for upholding the rule of law and warned against any attempts to disrupt activities at the secretariat.
“This action is a clear demonstration of respect for constitutional order,” he said, while urging party members to embrace unity and reconciliation.
He also acknowledged the role of Nyesom Wike in stabilising the faction.
However, the rival camp loyal to Tanimu Turaki has strongly rejected the move, describing it as premature and legally questionable.
In a counter-statement issued by its spokesperson, Ini Ememobong, the faction argued that the court judgment cited remains under appeal, warning that enforcing it at this stage could undermine ongoing legal proceedings.
Ememobong further raised concerns over what he described as possible partisan interference, insisting that the dispute should remain an internal party matter.
Despite the tensions, he called on supporters to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring that the faction would pursue legal avenues to challenge the development.
“Though pain may tarry at night, joy will come in the morning,” he said, expressing hope for eventual resolution.
The latest development underscores the deepening crisis within the PDP as competing factions continue to battle for control ahead of future political contests.
