A councillor of the All Progressives Congress (APC) representing Doka Ward in Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Muhammad Onumenya, has been abducted by suspected gunmen, intensifying fresh concerns over insecurity in the state.
According to sources, the incident occurred on Sunday, February 23, 2026, at about 7:35 p.m. along the Doma–Yelwa Village Road while the councillor was travelling within the area.
Security operatives, alongside local vigilantes and hunters, immediately launched a coordinated search operation after receiving reports of the attack. The joint team reportedly combed nearby bushes, forests, and suspected criminal hideouts in an effort to rescue the victim.
As of the time of this report, however, Onumenya’s whereabouts remain unknown, and no official statement has yet been issued by the state government.
The latest abduction adds to a growing pattern of insecurity across the state. In 2025, Governor Abdullahi Sule directed traditional rulers and community leaders to begin profiling new residents following repeated kidnappings and violent attacks in communities including Keana and Kadarko.
Later in November, the Nasarawa State House of Assembly raised alarm over escalating insecurity, declaring that the state was “no longer safe” and urging stronger government action to curb the wave of kidnappings and killings affecting both rural and urban areas.
Security agencies are continuing search operations as residents remain anxious over the fate of the abducted councillor.
