The African Union has issued a strong warning over the rapidly escalating military confrontation between the United States of America and Iran, describing the situation as a serious threat to global peace, economic stability, and regional security.
In an official statement released on Saturday, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, expressed deep concern following reports that U.S. forces, alongside Israel, carried out coordinated strikes on Iranian targets.
According to SUNTV Global Channel sources, the crisis intensified after U.S. President Donald Trump announced the start of what he described as “major combat operations” aimed at dismantling Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities. In a statement posted online, Trump warned Iranian leaders to choose between surrender or facing devastating consequences.
Meanwhile, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz confirmed that Israel launched what he called a “preventative strike,” marking one of the most serious military escalations between the nations in recent years.
The African Union cautioned that continued hostilities could trigger far-reaching economic consequences, particularly for developing nations. Officials warned that instability in the Middle East could disrupt global energy supplies, drive up fuel prices, and worsen food insecurity across Africa.
The AU noted that many African countries remain vulnerable due to heavy dependence on imported fuel and food commodities, making them especially exposed to geopolitical shocks.
In its appeal, the continental body urged all parties to immediately de-escalate tensions and return to diplomatic negotiations. The AU emphasised that all actions must respect international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter.
The Commission also expressed support for mediation efforts led by Oman, which has been working to facilitate dialogue between key stakeholders.
“Sustainable peace can only be achieved through diplomacy, not through force,” Youssouf stated, stressing that military confrontation risks plunging the region into broader instability.
The AU’s intervention reflects mounting international anxiety that the crisis could spiral into a wider regional conflict, potentially drawing in more actors and destabilising global markets.
As tensions remain high, the organisation called on world leaders to prioritise dialogue, cooperation, and collective responsibility to prevent further escalation.
