Top European leaders have called for an immediate ceasefire between the United States, Israel, and Iran, warning that the fast-rising conflict could have devastating global consequences, especially for energy security.
The call comes after a major escalation triggered by Israeli strikes on Iran’s South Pars Gas Field, followed by retaliatory attacks by Tehran on key infrastructure in Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
Speaking ahead of a summit in Brussels, French President Emmanuel Macron described the situation as a “reckless escalation” that threatens global stability.
Macron urged all parties to de-escalate tensions and reopen diplomatic channels, stressing that it is time for leaders involved in the conflict to “come to their senses” and prioritize peace.
Also weighing in, European Commission Vice President Kaja Kallas condemned Iran’s strikes on Qatar, warning that continued attacks would only deepen instability across the region.
She added that the ongoing conflict could indirectly benefit Russia, particularly amid its prolonged war in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz hinted at possible diplomatic progress, revealing that his discussions with U.S. President Donald J. Trump suggest Washington may be open to ending military operations.
On the security front, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte disclosed that ongoing consultations are focused on protecting the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil supply.
European leaders have expressed growing fears that the escalating conflict could spiral into a wider regional war, with severe economic and geopolitical consequences worldwide.
