The Government of Ghana has strongly criticised Canadian authorities over the denial of a temporary residence visa to Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a statement issued by Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government described the decision as unfair, disproportionate, and inconsistent with the principle of presumption of innocence.
According to the ministry, Canadian immigration authorities based the visa refusal on provisions of Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, citing ongoing criminal proceedings involving Partey in the United Kingdom. However, Ghana argued that the player has not been convicted of any offence and remains legally innocent until proven guilty.
The government expressed concern that the decision could prevent Partey from fully participating in World Cup activities hosted in Canada, one of the tournament’s host nations.
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has reportedly engaged Canadian officials on the matter, while the ministry has submitted an official diplomatic protest requesting a review of the decision.
The Ghanaian government also warned that it is prepared to pursue legal and administrative remedies, including seeking judicial review before the Federal Court of Canada if diplomatic efforts fail.
Despite the dispute, Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining strong bilateral relations with Canada and expressed hope that ongoing discussions would lead to an amicable resolution.
The government further stressed the importance of fairness in international sports, stating that football should continue to serve as a platform for unity, friendship, and respect for due process.
