The Federal Government has suspended its planned increase in registration fees for the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
The decision followed widespread reactions from parents, students, education stakeholders and members of the public who raised concerns over the impact of the proposed fee adjustment on Nigerian families.
The Federal Ministry of Education announced the suspension on Monday, stating that the earlier communication on the proposed increase has been withdrawn pending further consultations with relevant stakeholders.
In a statement issued by the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, the government said the decision was reached after carefully considering public feedback and concerns surrounding the planned review.
The ministry explained that the proposed adjustment was initially considered due to rising operational costs associated with conducting national examinations, including logistics, security, printing of examination materials, technology deployment and quality assurance measures.
However, Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, directed that the planned increase be suspended to allow for broader discussions with examination bodies, state ministries of education, school owners, parents’ associations, labour groups and other stakeholders.
The ministry said the consultation process is aimed at ensuring that any future decision on examination fees is fair, transparent and sustainable while protecting students’ access to education.
It added that the proposed WAEC and NECO registration fee increase will not take effect until consultations are concluded and a final decision is reached.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to improving access to quality education and ensuring that policies affecting Nigerian students are developed through inclusive engagement with affected stakeholders.
