An explosion at the Gariki Injection Substation on Friday evening disrupted electricity supply to several communities across Enugu metropolis, leaving thousands of residents and businesses without power.
According to MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL), the incident occurred at about 7:30 p.m. and damaged the indoor 11kV breaker at the Gariki Injection Substation, resulting in outages on the Army and Gariki 11kV feeders.
The blackout affected numerous locations, including Army Barracks, One Day Road, Meniru, Upper Meniru, Joe Continental, Gariki Market, Mayor Market, Agbani Road, Mobile Police Barracks, Amechi Road, Upper Mount, Ikiriki, Hill Crest, and several surrounding communities.
In a statement issued by the company’s Head of Communications, Emeka Ezeh, MEDL said its technical team had commenced a comprehensive assessment of the damaged equipment and restoration work was already underway.
The company apologized for the disruption and appealed to affected customers for patience while engineers work to restore electricity supply as quickly as possible.
The latest outage comes amid growing public concern over persistent power interruptions in Enugu State. Residents and business owners have repeatedly expressed frustration over inconsistent electricity supply, with many relying on costly petrol and diesel generators to sustain daily activities.
Earlier this year, the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) sanctioned several of MainPower’s feeders after investigations found that the company failed to meet the minimum electricity supply required under the Service-Based Tariff framework despite charging customers accordingly.
Power restoration efforts are ongoing, while residents await further updates from the electricity distribution company.
