The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has issued a strong call for an immediate end to the ongoing Middle East conflict, warning that continued fighting could trigger devastating global economic and humanitarian consequences.

Speaking during a joint press briefing alongside António Costa, Guterres delivered urgent messages to key actors, including the United States and Israel.

“It’s high time to end this war that is risking to get completely out of control,” he warned.

Guterres stressed that the ongoing conflict is already inflicting severe suffering on civilians, while also sending dangerous shockwaves through the global economy—particularly affecting vulnerable and developing nations.

In a direct warning to Iran, the UN chief urged restraint, cautioning against expanding the conflict by targeting neighbouring countries.

“Stop attacking your neighbours; they were never parties to the conflict,” he said.

He further highlighted the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, warning that any prolonged disruption to the vital oil corridor could have catastrophic consequences for global energy supply and everyday life worldwide.

According to him, millions of people with no connection to the conflict would suffer if the route remains blocked.

Guterres also noted that the UN Security Council has already called for an immediate ceasefire and the reopening of key global trade routes.

Reinforcing the need for diplomacy, he emphasized that international law must take precedence over military action.

“It’s time for the force of the law to prevail over the law of the force,” he declared.

The UN chief also praised the growing partnership between the United Nations and the European Union, expressing confidence in their joint role in promoting global peace, justice, climate action, and responsible governance.

As tensions continue to rise, Guterres’ warning underscores growing global fears that the conflict could spiral into a wider crisis with far-reaching economic and humanitarian impacts.
