President Bola Tinubu has cautioned that democracy is at risk when citizens lose confidence in the electoral process, urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and political parties to ensure credible, peaceful, and transparent elections in Ekiti and Osun states.
Speaking during his Democracy Day address on Friday, the President stressed that public trust remains the foundation of any democratic system and called on all stakeholders to protect the integrity of upcoming polls.
“Democracy fails when citizens doubt the process,” Tinubu stated while addressing preparations for the forthcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun.
The President emphasized that Nigeria’s democratic journey, which began with the return to civilian rule in 1999, represents the country’s longest uninterrupted period of democratic governance.
According to him, Nigerians have consistently elected their leaders through the ballot box, witnessed peaceful transfers of power, and resolved political disputes through democratic institutions rather than violence.
“Today, we celebrate not only democracy but also the enduring Nigerian spirit,” Tinubu said.
“For 27 unbroken years, Nigerians have chosen their leaders through elections, witnessed peaceful transitions of power, and resolved disagreements through constitutional means. Our democracy is not perfect, but it is ours, and we must continue to strengthen and defend it.”
The President also appealed to Nigerian youths to remain committed to nation-building, encouraging them to contribute to the country’s development rather than seeking opportunities abroad.
“To our young people: Nigeria is your home and your future. Build here, innovate here, work here, and vote here,” he said.
Tinubu further paid tribute to members of the Armed Forces, the Police, intelligence agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community stakeholders for their roles in promoting peace, stability, and national unity.
He also honoured pro-democracy activists, journalists, labour leaders, students, and other Nigerians who sacrificed for the nation’s democratic advancement, noting that many endured persecution, imprisonment, exile, and even death in the struggle for democratic governance.
The President’s remarks come amid growing public scrutiny of Nigeria’s electoral process and increasing calls for transparency and accountability as preparations intensify for the upcoming elections in Ekiti and Osun states.
Political observers say the credibility of the elections will be closely watched as a test of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and electoral reforms.
