The House of Representatives has announced an emergency session to review the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) recently released timetable for the 2027 general elections.
In a statement, House Spokesman Rep. Akin Rotimi said the announcement carries “constitutional and national significance,” noting that the February 20, 2027, date for the presidential and National Assembly elections makes prompt legislative attention critical.
The emergency sitting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 17, 2026. Members received an internal memo from the Speaker’s office emphasizing the urgency of the matter, urging lawmakers to prioritize attendance and ensure focused deliberations on issues arising from INEC’s timetable.
Rep. Rotimi added, “All related business will be handled expeditiously,” reflecting the House’s commitment to swift action on matters of national importance.
The session comes shortly after INEC unveiled the full 2027 election schedule, which includes party primaries set between July and September 2026, as well as the start of continuous voter registration in April 2026.
Lawmakers are also expected to discuss potential amendments to the Electoral Act, aiming to strengthen legislative oversight and ensure a smooth electoral process.
