A major leadership crisis has rocked the , as aggrieved members petition the Inspector-General of the , , over allegations of unlawful detention and abuse of police processes.
In a strongly worded petition signed by the association’s International Commissioner, , members accused a factional leader, , of orchestrating a forceful takeover of the organisation while disregarding constitutional procedures and court directives.
The petition described the situation as a “matter of urgent national concern,” warning that the deepening leadership tussle could destabilise one of Nigeria’s foremost youth organisations.
According to insiders, the crisis dates back to 2024 when Ekanola was suspended by the Oyo State Scout Council. Despite the suspension, he allegedly formed a parallel leadership structure with loyalists, escalating tensions within the body.
The situation worsened after a Federal High Court reportedly restrained the association from holding its Annual General Meeting in . While most state councils complied with the order, Ekanola’s faction allegedly defied the ruling, proceeded with the meeting, and declared him Chief Commissioner.
Petitioners further alleged that Ekanola issued threats to compliant state councils, vowing to take over their offices nationwide.
Efforts by the Federal Ministry of Youth Development to mediate the dispute reportedly failed, as the factional group declined multiple invitations for dialogue.
The crisis took another turn following a confrontation at the association’s national headquarters in Makoko, , where Ekanola was accused of leading a forceful takeover amid disputes involving trustees and property developers.
Although he was arrested at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Yaba, he was later granted bail.
However, the focus has now shifted to alleged police misconduct. Two Scout leaders, identified as Samson Idowu and Raji Bomodeoku, were reportedly arrested after honoring police invitations and detained for four days without a warrant or formal charges.
They were later transferred to the Force Intelligence Department in , where they are said to remain in custody despite cooperating with investigators.
The petitioners raised serious concerns, including disobedience to court orders, unlawful detention, and possible misuse of police authority. They are calling on the IGP to intervene, ensure the release of those detained without legal basis, and guarantee a fair and impartial investigation.
The unfolding crisis highlights growing concerns over internal disputes within national organisations and the alleged misuse of law enforcement mechanisms.
