The (NDC) has successfully elected a new set of state executives in despite a violent disruption by suspected political thugs.
At the party’s state congress held on Monday, delegates elected as State Chairman, alongside as State Secretary. The emergence of the new leadership followed a consensus agreement among party members.
The congress, which took place at Aborigene Hall in Enugu metropolis, initially proceeded smoothly, with party officials dissolving the existing acting executive committee before adopting a new list of leaders.
Declaring the results, State Congress Committee Secretary, Engr. Echezona Ogbanufe, charged the newly elected executives to strengthen party unity, expand grassroots support, and remain committed to discipline and loyalty.
In his acceptance speech, Anih pledged to lead with fairness and inclusiveness, promising to build a stronger and more united party structure across the state.
However, the exercise was marred by chaos when suspected thugs reportedly stormed the venue, disrupting proceedings and forcing delegates and members to flee for safety. Witnesses said the attackers tore down party materials and brought the congress to an abrupt halt.
Despite the disruption, party officials confirmed that the elections had already been concluded before the violence escalated.
Other members elected into the state executive include Florence Anigbo as Women Leader, Clinton Ogbonna as Youth Leader, Emmanuel Ugwueze as Publicity Secretary, and Nnejichoke Michael as Treasurer, among others.
