A tragic accident struck the convoy of Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, in Ibadan, Oyo State, after a petrol tanker rammed into the motorcade, killing a police dispatch rider attached to the Senate President.
Akpabio disclosed the incident on Tuesday during plenary at the Senate, where he announced the death of the officer, DSP Ibrahim Hussaini, and led lawmakers in mourning the loss.
According to the Senate President, the accident occurred on Sunday shortly after members of his convoy picked him up from the Ibadan airport, following an official visit to Oyo State for the installation of a fellow senator.
“My dispatch rider was run over by a tanker driver, and his head was shattered,” Akpabio told the chamber. “We buried him about 15 minutes ago in Kogi State.”
Police dispatch riders are typically officers who ride government-branded motorcycles as part of convoys assigned to top public officials.
Akpabio revealed that the late DSP Hussaini, who hailed from Kogi State, left behind two wives and four children. He appealed to heads of ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) to grant automatic employment to the deceased officer’s children.
“By the grace of God, I’m recommending two of his senior children for immediate employment in any parastatal willing to take them. If that is not possible, I will employ them personally in my private concerns,” the Senate President added.
Raising a motion for personal explanation, Senator Sunday Karimi (Kogi West) formally brought the matter before the Senate. While condoling with Akpabio and the bereaved family, Karimi disclosed that DSP Hussaini was a dedicated officer who was due for retirement in 2026 and had served in the Senate President’s convoy since he assumed office in 2023.
The Senate session also recorded another loss, as Karimi announced the death of Ibrahim Tukur, a long-time driver to Senator Isah Jibrin (Kogi East), who died at his residence on Saturday.
In an emotional tribute, Senator Jibrin recounted his 25-year working relationship with Tukur, which began during his time at the now-defunct AfriBank.
The Senate observed a minute of silence in honour of both deceased officers, marking a somber moment in the chamber.
