Fresh tensions have erupted in the Middle East after U.S. President Donald Trump warned that Iran could face “total annihilation” if it continues to violate an ongoing ceasefire agreement, while Tehran claims it has launched missile and drone attacks on American military bases in the Gulf.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump confirmed that U.S. forces carried out precision airstrikes targeting Iranian missile and drone storage facilities, along with coastal radar installations. He said the strikes were a direct response to an alleged Iranian drone attack on a commercial cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.
The U.S. president accused Iran of breaching the ceasefire and warned that Washington was prepared to “finish the job” militarily if Tehran continued its actions.
Iran Claims Retaliatory Strikes
In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it had launched a large-scale missile and drone operation against what it described as eight U.S. military installations across the Gulf.
According to the IRGC, the targets included Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait and the U.S. Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain. However, the group did not provide evidence or details regarding the level of damage caused by the attacks.
Iran said the operation was carried out in retaliation for earlier U.S. strikes on five of its coastal military positions, warning that any further attacks would be met with an even stronger military response.
Fears Grow Over Wider Conflict
The escalating confrontation has renewed concerns over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital oil shipping routes. Iran also warned that navigation through the strategic waterway could be disrupted if hostilities continue.
The latest exchange has raised fears that the fragile ceasefire could collapse entirely, increasing the risk of a broader regional conflict with significant consequences for global security and energy markets.
