Public primary and secondary schools across Oyo State have been shut down indefinitely as teachers commenced a statewide strike action over the continued captivity of abducted teachers and students.
The industrial action was directed by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), following growing concerns over the prolonged detention of educators and learners kidnapped during a recent attack on a school in the state.
In a statement issued on May 31, 2026, and signed by the Oyo State NUT Secretary, Comrade Salami B. Olukayode, the union instructed all public school teachers to withdraw their services beginning Monday, June 1, until further notice.
According to the union, the decision was taken to pressure authorities and security agencies to intensify efforts toward the safe rescue of the victims who remain in the hands of their abductors.
“The continued detention of our colleagues and learners has created fear, panic, and hopelessness among teachers, students, parents, and communities across the state,” the union stated.
NUT noted that the worsening security situation has discouraged many parents from sending their children to school, while also disrupting academic activities throughout the state.
The union emphasized that the strike serves as a strong call for urgent government intervention and swift action to secure the release of all abductees.
Teachers have been urged to remain law-abiding and stay safe at home while the strike continues.
The development follows the May 15, 2026 attack on Community High School in Ahoro-Esinele, Oriire Local Government Area, where armed gunmen reportedly abducted the school principal, Mrs. Rachael Alamu, alongside several teachers and students during school hours.
The incident sparked widespread outrage and renewed concerns over the safety of schools amid rising insecurity across parts of Nigeria.
As of the time of filing this report, the abducted teachers and students have yet to regain their freedom, while the indefinite strike has effectively halted academic activities in public schools across Oyo State.
