Panic briefly gripped Lagos Island on Wednesday evening after a fire outbreak swept through parts of the 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance House on Martins Street, a major commercial hub known for warehousing and trading in clothing materials.
The fire reportedly broke out at about 4:40 p.m., sending thick smoke billowing from the multi-storey building and disrupting commercial activities in the area as emergency responders rushed to the scene.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said it received a distress call at 4:41 p.m., with firefighting crews arriving at the location just 12 minutes later, at 4:53 p.m.
In a statement shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the agency disclosed that the fire affected up to the fifth floor of the 25-storey structure.
“Lagos State Fire & Rescue responded to a fire at Great Nigeria Insurance House, Martins St., Lagos Island. Fire affected up to the 5th floor of a 25-storey building. No casualties recorded. Firefighting ongoing,” the statement read.
The Controller-General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, reassured residents and business owners that no lives were lost in the incident. She explained that the fire originated on the fifth floor before spreading to lower sections of the building.
According to Adeseye, the building is largely used for warehouse storage and the sale of clothing materials, though it also houses some corporate offices and retail shops.
Firefighters worked late into the evening to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the building and adjoining structures.
While no casualties were recorded, concerns remain over the extent of damage to goods stored in the building, as investigations into the cause of the fire are expected to commence after firefighting operations are concluded.
