A fresh wave of communal violence has claimed one life and left another person hospitalised in Biase Local Government Area of Cross River State, raising renewed concerns over insecurity in the area.
Philip Obin, Special Adviser to Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu on Digital Economy Development, alleged that armed men from Egbor Community invaded farmland belonging to residents of Urugbam Community on Saturday, July 4.
According to Obin, the attackers opened fire on farmers, killing one resident and injuring several others. He also criticised what he described as the slow response of government authorities following the deadly incident.
Confirming the attack, the Cross River State Police Command said two farmers from Orugbam Community were shot by unidentified gunmen while working on farmland near Egbor Community at about 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Police spokesperson, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, identified the victims as Nkeruwem Ikoh and Ukam Ajah Okpan. He said Ikoh later died from his injuries, while Okpan is currently receiving medical treatment. The deceased’s body has been deposited at Uwana Mortuary in Afikpo, Ebonyi State.
The Police Command said a full investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack, identify those responsible, and bring them to justice.
Residents of Orugbam, Egbor, and neighbouring communities have been urged to remain calm, avoid taking the law into their own hands, and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could assist the ongoing investigation.
Authorities say further updates will be provided as investigations continue.
