Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has pledged to restore Nigeria’s petrol subsidy if elected president in the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku made the promise during a Facebook Live session while responding to questions about the removal of the fuel subsidy and the impact of the policy on Nigerians.
The former vice president said he did not initially oppose the removal of the subsidy but has since changed his position, questioning how the savings from the policy have been utilised by the government.
“I initially did not oppose the removal of the fuel subsidy. But now that it has been removed, where is the money? Where has the subsidy money gone? Has it been used to improve healthcare, education or security?” Atiku asked.
He went further to promise that he would restore the subsidy if elected president in 2027.
“If I win the presidential election, I will restore the subsidy. And anyone who stole Nigeria’s subsidy funds must return the money,” he said.
President Bola Tinubu announced the removal of the petrol subsidy during his inauguration on May 29, 2023, a decision that immediately triggered a significant increase in petrol prices.
The policy has also contributed to higher transportation, food and other living costs, intensifying economic pressure on households across the country.
Tinubu has consistently defended the decision, arguing that the subsidy had become too expensive for Nigeria to sustain and that government resources needed to be redirected to other areas of the economy.
Atiku’s latest promise is likely to become a major talking point ahead of the 2027 presidential election, particularly as the cost of living and fuel prices remain key concerns for millions of Nigerians.
