The legal team representing the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has threatened legal action against News Central Television and entrepreneur Chigozie Nnabugwu over comments made during a live television programme calling for Kanu’s killing.
In a statement issued by Kanu’s Special Counsel, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, the legal team described the remarks as “reckless, irresponsible and unlawful,” arguing that they endangered Kanu’s life and could undermine the ongoing judicial process.
The controversy followed comments allegedly made by Nnabugwu during a live appearance on News Central TV, where he reportedly claimed that the killing of Kanu would help restore peace and normalcy in Nigeria’s South-East region.
Reacting to the broadcast, Kanu’s lawyers maintained that any public call for the extrajudicial killing of a citizen is unacceptable and may amount to incitement, a threat to life and interference with an ongoing court case.
The legal team further argued that the comments could attract criminal liability under relevant Nigerian laws, including provisions of the Cybercrimes Act and other applicable statutes relating to incitement and public order.
They also criticised News Central Television for airing the remarks, alleging that the broadcaster failed to exercise adequate editorial responsibility by allowing statements they described as inflammatory and potentially dangerous.
As part of their demands, Kanu’s legal representatives called on Chigozie Nnabugwu to immediately retract his comments publicly, while urging News Central Television to issue an unreserved televised apology for broadcasting the remarks.
The lawyers warned that failure to comply with these demands could result in legal proceedings against both the guest and the television station.
The development adds another dimension to the legal and political controversies surrounding the IPOB leader, whose trial continues before the Federal High Court.
