The Defence Headquarters in Abuja has confirmed the killing of Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, a top ISIS commander reportedly linked to the abduction of more than 100 schoolgirls in Dapchi, Yobe State, including Leah Sharibu who remains missing.
According to the Nigerian military, the operation was carried out jointly by Nigerian and United States forces in what officials described as a major breakthrough in the fight against terrorism across Nigeria, the Lake Chad Basin, and the wider Sahel region.
In a statement issued by Major General Samaila Uba, the military described al-Minuki as one of the world’s most dangerous terrorists and a key operational figure within ISIS global structures.
The Defence Headquarters revealed that the slain commander played a strategic role in coordinating extremist activities, propaganda operations, weapons development, explosives manufacturing, and drone technology for ISIS affiliates operating across West Africa and beyond.
The military also disclosed that intelligence reports suggested al-Minuki may recently have been elevated to one of the highest leadership positions within the global ISIS network.
According to security authorities, the terrorist leader was previously associated with Boko Haram before pledging allegiance to ISIS in 2015 and expanding operations across the Sahel region.
Officials further linked him to the infamous 2018 Dapchi schoolgirls kidnapping, an incident that sparked international outrage and renewed global concern over insecurity in northeastern Nigeria.
The Defence Headquarters praised the growing military cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, stating that intelligence sharing and joint operations remain crucial in dismantling terrorist networks threatening regional and international security.
The military also commended troops involved in the operation for their professionalism and bravery, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to ongoing offensives aimed at restoring peace in affected communities.
The latest development comes after United States President, , earlier announced that American and Nigerian forces had jointly carried out the operation targeting the ISIS commander.
