The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has announced a nationwide solidarity and peace protest to demand the immediate rescue and safe return of teachers and students abducted in recent attacks on schools in Oyo and Borno states.
The demonstration, scheduled for Tuesday, June 2, 2026, comes amid growing outrage over the worsening security situation facing schools and educational institutions across Nigeria.
In a notice issued to members and signed by the Publicity Secretary of the NUT Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, Comrade Ibukun Adekeye, the union directed teachers nationwide to mobilise for the peaceful protest in line with instructions from its national leadership.
According to the notice, participants are expected to gather at the Federal Ministry of Education Headquarters in Abuja’s Central Business District by 8:00 a.m.
The union stated that the protest is intended to pressure authorities into taking urgent action to rescue the kidnapped victims while drawing national attention to the dangers confronting teachers and learners across the country.
“For days, many of you have been asking when the union would act over the abduction of our teachers and learners in Oyo and Borno States. The answer is now,” the statement declared.
The NUT urged members to participate fully, either individually or through their various branches, while wearing official union-branded shirts and caps.
Describing the demonstration as a collective stand against attacks on education, the union stressed that the safety and protection of teachers and students must become a national priority.
“An injury to one teacher is an injury to all. Our presence is not just a protest; it is a collective demand for the safety, dignity and protection of every teacher and learner,” the statement added.
The union also called on federal and state governments, as well as security agencies, to intensify efforts toward rescuing the abducted victims and preventing future attacks on schools.
The planned protest follows the continued captivity of at least 25 pupils, teachers, and the principal of Community High School, Ahoro-Esinle, in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, who were abducted by armed bandits.
Education stakeholders and civil society groups have repeatedly warned that persistent attacks on schools are threatening access to education, forcing school closures, and exposing thousands of children and teachers to danger across several parts of Nigeria.
The NUT says the nationwide action is aimed at ensuring that the voices of teachers are heard and that abducted colleagues and students know they have not been abandoned.
