Gunmen have killed two police officers attached to the convoy of the Chief of Staff to Anambra State Governor, Chief Ben Nwankwo, during a deadly ambush along the Amansea-Ufuma Road in Anambra State.
The attack, which occurred on Sunday night at about 8:30 p.m., has heightened security concerns across the state and triggered a massive manhunt for the perpetrators.
According to security sources, the assailants launched a surprise attack on the convoy while it was travelling through the area. Although Chief Nwankwo escaped the incident unhurt, two police operatives attached to his security detail lost their lives in the exchange.
Several civilians were also reportedly affected during the attack.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, convened an emergency security meeting at the Command Headquarters in Awka on Monday and ordered tactical units to identify and arrest the attackers within 48 hours.
Describing the killings as a direct challenge to law enforcement authorities, the police commissioner vowed that those responsible would face justice.
“I want immediate results. The killers of our officers must be tracked down and apprehended without delay,” he reportedly told security operatives.
As part of the response, the police command launched a special operation codenamed “Operation Fish Them Out,” aimed at intensifying intelligence gathering and coordinated offensives against criminal groups operating within the state.
The commissioner also warned residents to remain vigilant, revealing intelligence reports suggesting that some criminal elements now disguise themselves in military and police uniforms while carrying out attacks and other illegal activities.
He specifically cautioned commuters using the Amansea-Ufuma Road corridor to exercise extreme caution, noting that the route has increasingly become a hotspot for criminal activities.
“The road has recently become a haven for criminal elements. Members of the public should remain alert and security conscious, especially during late hours,” he warned.
Despite the tragic incident, the police command assured residents that security forces have already commenced intelligence-driven operations across strategic locations in the state and expressed confidence that those responsible would soon be apprehended.
The latest attack adds to growing concerns over insecurity in parts of Anambra State, where armed groups have repeatedly targeted security personnel, government officials, and travellers along major highways.
Authorities say coordinated operations involving multiple security agencies are ongoing to prevent further attacks and restore confidence among residents.
