The Nigeria Police Force has announced a solemn interdenominational prayer service in honour of 17 policemen who lost their lives during a deadly terrorist attack on the Special Forces Training Camp in Buni Yadi, Yobe State.
According to an official police wireless message dated May 18, 2026, and marked “M/Immediate,” the slain officers were on special duty when terrorists attacked the training facility, resulting in what authorities described as a “tragic loss.”
The internal signal, issued from the Office of the Inspector-General of Police Secretariat and signed by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Research and Planning on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, directed all police formations nationwide to participate in the memorial service.
The prayer session is scheduled to hold on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at the Helipad of the Force Headquarters in Abuja by 10:00 a.m., with personnel instructed to assemble at the venue no later than 9:45 a.m.
According to the police authorities, the ceremony is aimed at offering special prayers for the fallen officers, paying tribute to their bravery, and standing in solidarity with their grieving families and loved ones.
The directive also assigned responsibilities to various departments ahead of the event. The Provost Department was tasked with coordinating vehicle movement and personnel assembly, while the Police Band was directed to provide only solemn music during the service.
In addition, the Force Public Relations Department was instructed to ensure adequate media coverage, while police chaplains and imams were directed to work closely with the Inspector-General’s office to ensure a smooth programme.
The deadly attack on the Special Forces Training Camp in Buni Yadi has once again raised concerns over the worsening security situation in Nigeria’s North-East region, where security formations continue to face repeated attacks from armed insurgent groups.
However, the police authorities are yet to release full details surrounding the circumstances of the attack or the identities of the slain officers.
