Former Kano State Governor and Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has threatened legal action against popular cleric Primate Elijah Ayodele over comments alleging he could betray the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Through his legal representatives, Magaji Mato Ibrahim SAN & Co., Kwankwaso issued a 24-hour ultimatum demanding a public retraction and apology, warning that failure to comply could result in a ₦10 billion defamation lawsuit.
According to the legal team, the comments, allegedly made during a church service and later circulated across social media platforms, portrayed Kwankwaso as politically insincere and untrustworthy.
The lawyers described the remarks as false, malicious, and defamatory, arguing that they were deliberately designed to damage the former governor’s reputation and create distrust within the NDC and among its supporters.
In a demand letter made public on Wednesday, the legal team insisted that Kwankwaso’s long-standing political career and public image had been unfairly targeted by the allegations.
The lawyers further demanded that Primate Ayodele publish a full and unconditional retraction on all platforms where the statements were circulated and ensure the apology receives the same level of visibility as the original comments.
They also requested a written undertaking from the cleric, pledging not to publish or repeat similar statements in the future.
According to the legal notice, failure to meet the demands within the stipulated timeframe would compel Kwankwaso to seek legal redress, including a claim for ₦10 billion in damages.
The development has sparked fresh political discussions as preparations continue ahead of future electoral contests, with both political and religious figures increasingly becoming subjects of public scrutiny and controversy.
