A fresh court document has revealed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) obtained a court order to freeze three bank accounts belonging to the Osun State Government, contrary to earlier reports suggesting that only one account was affected.
The document shows that the anti-corruption agency secured an ex-parte order from the Federal High Court in Abuja authorising the freezing of the accounts over allegations bordering on the diversion of public funds and money laundering.
The order, granted on August 5, 2026, by Justice M. G. Umar, was issued in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1750/2026, following an application filed by the EFCC.
According to the court document, the affected accounts include the Osun State Government Federal Allocation Account domiciled with First Bank Plc, as well as two Osun State Joint Allocation Accounts held with Zenith Bank Plc.
The EFCC told the court that the accounts were being investigated in connection with alleged diversion of public funds and money laundering, pending the completion of investigations and possible prosecution.
The development comes amid controversy over the timing of the EFCC action, which occurred days before the Osun State governorship election.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier directed the EFCC to return to court and seek the lifting of the freezing order, expressing concern that the timing of the move could create the impression of political interference.
The EFCC, however, maintained that its action was based on an ongoing investigation into the alleged misuse of about ₦11 billion involving Ecology Funds, Intervention Funds, and Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocations.
The commission said it had been investigating the matter since March 2026 and moved to secure the accounts after allegedly detecting suspicious movement of funds into corporate accounts.
Meanwhile, the Osun State Government has challenged the EFCC’s action in court, accusing the agency of unlawfully freezing the state’s accounts at a politically sensitive period.
The state government argued that the accounts are essential for funding salaries, pensions, healthcare, education, security, and other government obligations, while seeking the unfreezing of the accounts and damages.
The controversy continues as political tension rises ahead of the Osun governorship election.
