The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has warned police officers deployed for the Osun State governorship election against engaging in any act capable of undermining the credibility of the electoral process.
Speaking during a briefing ahead of Saturday’s election, Disu said any officer found assisting in election rigging, intimidation, or other forms of misconduct would face disciplinary action and public punishment.
The police chief urged officers assigned to election duties to remain professional, neutral, and committed to protecting the democratic process.
“Every police officer deployed to Osun State for the upcoming governorship election should carry out their duties diligently. Any officer who helps to rig the election or compromises the electoral process in Osun will be punished publicly,” Disu said.
The IGP also raised concerns over the activities of cult groups in the state, alleging that political actors had contributed to the spread of such groups as part of attempts to influence the electoral environment.
According to him, security agencies have been monitoring developments in Osun and would remain vigilant throughout the election period to prevent violence, intimidation, and other electoral offences.
Disu further warned officers not to sacrifice their careers for political interests, stressing that the Nigeria Police Force would not protect personnel found guilty of misconduct.
“We are not hiding police officers that misbehave. Nigerian officers know the punishment for compromising,” he added.
The warning comes amid rising concerns over the conduct of the election, following allegations of vote buying, voter pressure, and other electoral irregularities.
The poll has also been surrounded by controversy over the freezing of Osun State Government accounts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) during an investigation into alleged financial misconduct.
President Bola Tinubu had reportedly directed the EFCC to take steps toward lifting the restriction, warning that the timing of the action could create perceptions of political interference.
As voters prepare to head to the polls, security agencies have assured residents that measures are being put in place to ensure a peaceful, free, and credible election.
