Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have launched a deadly attack on Lassa, a community in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, abducting an unspecified number of students sitting for the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations, along with several teachers.
The attackers, who reportedly stormed the town on motorcycles and dressed in military camouflage, struck on Monday during a busy market day, causing panic as residents fled for safety.
According to eyewitnesses, the insurgents invaded the community while students were writing their NECO examinations, forcing several candidates and teachers into captivity before fleeing to an unknown destination.
At least one teacher was reportedly shot dead during the attack, while the exact number of those abducted and any additional casualties remain unknown as search efforts continue.
Residents alleged that soldiers stationed in the area were away on a patrol to nearby Uba, about 16 kilometres from Lassa, when the terrorists carried out the assault.
“The soldiers were not around when the terrorists invaded. They came in large numbers, firing sporadically and causing panic everywhere. They took away students writing NECO and their teachers,” an eyewitness said.
The latest incident has sparked fresh concerns over the worsening security situation in parts of southern Borno State, where communities continue to suffer deadly attacks despite ongoing military operations against insurgent groups.
As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had not issued an official statement on the attack or confirmed the number of victims.
The incident has renewed calls for stronger security around schools and examination centres, particularly in conflict-prone areas, to protect students, teachers and other civilians from terrorist attacks.
