The Governor of , , has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), citing prolonged internal crisis and legal uncertainty within the opposition party.
Governor Mohammed announced the move on Saturday following consultations with political stakeholders and a review of a recent Supreme Court judgement on the PDP’s leadership dispute.
According to him, the ruling intensified instability within the party, effectively weakening rival factions and leaving the Board of Trustees in a temporary supervisory role.
He explained that despite several days of high-level discussions in Abuja aimed at resolving the crisis, efforts to restore unity within the PDP had failed.
“After careful consideration and wide consultations across the country, it has become clear that our efforts to restore stability have not yielded the desired results,” the governor stated.
Mohammed described his decision as a strategic political realignment rather than an act of resentment, stressing that his goal remains good governance and political continuity.
He expressed gratitude to the PDP for the platform it provided for his political career but insisted that the current situation made his continued membership untenable.
The governor also confirmed that members of his State Executive Council seeking elective positions had resigned in line with electoral regulations as part of the transition process.
At the event, the National Chairman of the APM, , formally welcomed the governor into the party, describing APM as a stable political platform built on integrity and service.
Dantalle added that the party had no internal crisis and was gaining strength nationwide, citing recent local government electoral successes.
He presented Governor Mohammed with his membership card and party insignia, symbolising his official entry into the party.
The defection marks a significant political shift in northern Nigeria and adds to growing uncertainty within the PDP as it continues to grapple with internal leadership tensions ahead of future elections.
