A coalition of African activists has issued a strong condemnation of rising xenophobic violence in , declaring individuals accused of promoting such attacks “persona non grata” across the continent.
Operating under the banner of Africa Resistance Against Xenophobia, the group accused certain figures of fueling a wave of violence, mob killings, and destruction of businesses belonging to Black migrants.
In a statement jointly signed by and , the coalition described the situation as a betrayal of Africa’s shared history and unity.
“What is happening goes beyond violence—it is a betrayal of the spirit of Ubuntu and the sacrifices of those who fought for Africa’s freedom,” the statement read.
The group referenced prominent African liberation icons, including , , , , , and , stressing that their struggles were rooted in unity, not division.
The activists specifically named several individuals they accused of inciting or justifying xenophobic violence, calling for their investigation and isolation. They urged leaders of all 54 African nations to take decisive action, including placing such individuals on a continental watchlist for human rights violations.
In addition, the coalition called for mass mobilization within South Africa, urging youth, workers, and civil society groups to rise against xenophobia, warning that “silence is complicity.”
While commending for speaking out against the attacks, the group criticized the South African government for failing to address the root causes of the crisis.
According to the activists, underlying issues such as unemployment, inequality, and insecurity are driving tensions, and xenophobia is being used as a scapegoat for governance failures.
They further called on African leaders to move away from neo-colonial economic structures and prioritize the continent’s development, insisting that Africa’s resources must benefit its people.
As tensions continue to rise, the coalition warned that failure to act decisively could normalize hate-driven violence and deepen divisions across the continent.
