Tension is rising in Osun State ahead of the forthcoming governorship election following the killing of Kolade Eluyera, the son of an Accord Party chieftain, by unidentified gunmen in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area.
The tragic incident has sparked fresh political accusations and heightened fears of violence in the state as rival political camps trade blame over the deadly attack.
Confirming the development, the spokesperson of the Osun State Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed that the victim was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds, adding that investigations had already commenced.
According to him, the Commissioner of Police has deployed additional security personnel to the area to maintain peace and track down those responsible for the killing.
“Investigation is on and the Commissioner of Police has deployed more men to the area. We are working with those who brought the corpse to get more information,” Ojelabi stated.
Meanwhile, the Imole Campaign Council, which is coordinating the re-election campaign of Governor Ademola Adeleke, described the killing as politically motivated and called for a thorough investigation by security agencies.
In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Pelumi Olajengbesi, the council alleged that suspected political thugs linked to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) carried out the attack near Onireke Mosque in Ikire late Friday night.
Olajengbesi claimed that several security alerts and complaints had previously been submitted to law enforcement authorities concerning alleged intimidation, harassment, kidnapping, and attacks targeting members of the Accord Party in the area, but no decisive action was taken to prevent the violence.
“What is unfolding in Osun State is becoming dangerously alarming, condemnable, and a direct threat to constitutional democracy, public peace, and political freedom,” he said.
He further extended condolences to the family of the deceased and members of the Accord Party while urging the Inspector-General of Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies to launch an independent investigation into the incident.
However, the allegations were strongly rejected by the Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji Governorship Election Campaign Council of the APC.
Speaking on behalf of the council, Kola Olabisi described the accusations as false, politically motivated, and an attempt to damage the image of the opposition party.
“It is uncharitable, wicked and inhuman for the Adeleke re-election campaign council to spread falsehoods capable of threatening the peace and security of Osun State,” Olabisi stated.
He insisted that violence has never been associated with the APC and accused the ruling party of exploiting the tragic death for political advantage ahead of the election.
The killing has continued to generate tension across parts of Osun State, with residents calling on security agencies to swiftly uncover the perpetrators and prevent further violence as political activities intensify.
