A storm of political backlash has erupted in Washington after top U.S. lawmakers accused President Donald Trump of unlawfully dragging the United States into war following coordinated U.S.–Israeli airstrikes on Iran.
In a strongly worded reaction on Saturday, several senators warned that the military action violated the U.S. Constitution and could push America toward another prolonged and costly Middle East conflict.
Leading the criticism, Senator Bernie Sanders described the strikes as “illegal, premeditated and unconstitutional,” arguing that Trump acted without approval from Congress, which alone holds the constitutional authority to declare war.
Sanders also accused Trump of aligning with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in what he called a long-standing agenda to draw the United States into direct military confrontation with Iran.
“The U.S. Constitution is clear — it is Congress that declares war, not a president acting unilaterally,” Sanders stated, urging the United States Senate to reconvene immediately and vote on a pending War Powers Resolution.
He warned that the attacks risk worsening global instability and setting a dangerous precedent internationally.
“If the United States and Israel can launch an attack against a sovereign nation, so can any other country. Might does not make right,” Sanders cautioned, adding that ordinary Americans would ultimately pay the human and financial price of another conflict.
Drawing parallels with past military interventions, he said Americans had been misled into wars in Vietnam and Iraq, warning that history could be repeating itself.
Echoing similar concerns, Senator Tammy Baldwin condemned the strikes, accusing Trump of ignoring constitutional limits on executive power.
“My whole career, I have believed diplomacy is the answer, not war,” Baldwin said, recalling her opposition to the Iraq invasion.
The growing congressional backlash signals a deepening political crisis in Washington as debates intensify over war powers, constitutional authority, and the risk of a wider Middle East escalation.
