A tragic dispute over the sharing of ₦8,000 realised during an Egungun festival celebration in Osun State has reportedly claimed the life of a young man identified as Bukunmi.

The incident occurred on Friday evening in Ilare community, following the conclusion of the annual masquerade procession attended by youths in the area.

According to eyewitness accounts, Bukunmi, alongside two others identified as Femi and Pelumi, had participated in the festival activities where money was collected from residents and spectators during the celebrations.

Trouble reportedly started when the trio attempted to divide the ₦8,000 realised from the procession. Sources disclosed that an argument broke out between Bukunmi and Pelumi, who are said to be relatives, before the situation spiralled out of control.

An eyewitness revealed that Femi initially stepped in to settle the disagreement and prevent a physical confrontation between the two family members. However, the peace effort allegedly took a deadly turn moments later.

“At about 7:30pm after the Egungun celebrations, the boys gathered to share the money they made. An argument started between Pelumi and Bukunmi over the sharing formula. Femi tried to calm them down, but Bukunmi suddenly attacked him while he was mediating. In anger, Femi allegedly stabbed Bukunmi with a knife,” the source narrated.

Residents immediately rushed the injured victim to a nearby hospital for treatment, while operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps reportedly intervened to stop angry youths from attacking the suspect.

The suspect was later handed over to police officers attached to the Esa Oke Division.

Sadly, Bukunmi was confirmed dead shortly after arriving at the hospital due to injuries sustained during the altercation.

Security sources disclosed that the knife allegedly used in the attack, the suspect, and the victim’s remains have all been taken into police custody as investigations continue.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Osun State Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the suspect is currently in detention while authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing.

“We are aware of the incident. The suspect is in police custody. The corpse has been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy, and investigation is ongoing,” the police spokesperson stated.

The shocking incident has since thrown the Ilare community into mourning, with residents expressing concern over the growing trend of violence during social and cultural gatherings.
