At least four people have been killed and several others injured after heavily armed bandits, disguised in military uniforms, launched a deadly overnight attack on Unguwan Lalle community in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
According to residents, the attackers stormed the community shortly after security personnel who had earlier responded to a separate incident left the area. The assault reportedly began around 8:00 p.m. on Sunday and continued until about 2:00 a.m. on Monday.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen, estimated to be about 200 in number, initially deceived villagers by wearing military uniforms, causing many residents to believe they were genuine soldiers before opening fire and attacking the community.
During the attack, the assailants reportedly killed four people, injured several others, looted homes and shops, and rustled an unspecified number of livestock.
Two of the victims were identified as Bilyaminu Wakkala and Danbaki Tulunawa, while the identities of two other victims from neighbouring Kongurus village were yet to be confirmed.
Residents explained that many people from nearby communities often spend the night in Unguwan Lalle due to persistent insecurity in the area, making the attack even more devastating.
A resident alleged that soldiers had earlier visited the village after reports that a farmer was killed by suspected bandits. The troops reportedly left at about 8:00 p.m., only for the attackers to return minutes later wearing military uniforms.
The resident further claimed the gunmen avoided the main highway where a military checkpoint was located, instead entering through bush paths. Some of the attackers were reportedly armed with Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPGs) and strategically positioned around the community before launching the assault.
Efforts to obtain official comments from local government authorities were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, said he had received information confirming the earlier killing of a farmer but had not yet received an official report on the overnight attack in Unguwan Lalle.
Security agencies are expected to investigate the incident as residents continue to express concern over the worsening security situation in the area.
