Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, , has appealed to airline operators to suspend planned shutdowns and avoid further increases in airfares amid a sharp rise in aviation fuel prices.
In a letter dated April 16, 2026, addressed to the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), the minister acknowledged the severe operational pressure facing airlines following a dramatic increase in the price of Jet A1 fuel from about ₦900 per litre in February to approximately ₦3,300 per litre, representing a rise of over 300 percent.
Keyamo commended domestic airlines for continuing operations despite the difficult economic conditions, describing their efforts as resilient and vital to national connectivity.
However, he warned that any move to shut down operations or significantly raise ticket prices would have serious consequences for the economy, including disruption of transportation networks and reduced public access to air travel.
He stated that the Federal Government, under President , is aware of the concerns raised by airline operators and is working toward urgent solutions to address the fuel price crisis.
The minister also announced that an emergency stakeholders’ meeting has been scheduled for April 22 in Abuja, bringing together key players in the aviation sector to find a sustainable and practical resolution to the ongoing challenges.
The appeal comes amid warnings from airline operators that they may suspend flight services if the fuel price situation is not urgently addressed, raising concerns over possible disruption in Nigeria’s aviation industry.
