The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has challenged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to publicly justify the continued imprisonment of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, amid what it describes as worsening insecurity across Nigeria.
In a press statement released on Thursday by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, the group accused Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, of convicting and sentencing Kanu without sufficient proof and without allocutus, alleging that the judgment was politically motivated.
IPOB claimed that Justice Omotosho acted to satisfy the interests of political figures within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), rather than to uphold justice.
“While Justice Omotosho busied himself doing the bidding of his APC political masters by jailing an innocent man, the very forces he sought to appease have now carried terror into Yorubaland itself,” the statement read.
Describing Kanu’s conviction as “vendetta dressed in robes,” IPOB said the situation now confronting parts of the country represents a grim irony, noting that communities are facing sustained attacks marked by raids on villages, loss of lives, and the destruction of ancestral lands.
The group argued that Kanu had long warned that injustice would not be limited to any single ethnic group, religion, or political bloc, but would eventually spread nationwide.
“He warned that those who sacrificed truth for ambition would reap the whirlwind. Those warnings are no longer prophecy; they are unfolding reality,” IPOB stated.
IPOB further accused advisers around President Tinubu of aggravating national instability by encouraging the continued detention of Kanu, which it described as unlawful. According to the group, Nigeria’s security challenges will persist until justice is restored.
“The immediate release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is not a concession; it is a necessity,” the statement added, warning that history would judge all those involved in what it called Kanu’s unjust imprisonment.
