A fresh political controversy is unfolding within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) following allegations of attempts to impose a candidate ahead of future electoral contests in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) and Bwari Area Council.
Some party stakeholders have raised concerns over the reported emergence of Hon. John Gabaya as a candidate, alleging that he is not a registered member of the APC and that no valid primary election was conducted to nominate him.
According to party members, a review of the APC membership register in Igu Ward, where Gabaya is reportedly expected to be registered, allegedly showed that his name does not appear in the official party records.
Party stakeholders argue that membership registration at the ward level is a fundamental requirement under the APC Constitution and Nigeria’s Electoral Act for anyone seeking nomination under the party’s platform.
The controversy deepened with allegations that no primary election was conducted to produce a candidate for the position. Critics within the party claim that efforts are underway to announce the outcome of a primary election that they insist never took place.
Reacting to the development, APC stakeholder Alhaji Mohammed Umar warned that such actions could expose the party to legal challenges and weaken its chances in future elections.
According to Umar, party leaders should ensure that all internal democratic processes are followed to avoid disputes that could affect the APC’s political fortunes in the Federal Capital Territory.
The allegations have sparked debate among party members, with many calling on the National Working Committee (NWC) to thoroughly investigate the claims before taking any official decision.
As of the time of this report, neither Hon. John Gabaya nor the APC National Working Committee had publicly responded to the allegations.
