The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on Nigeria’s National Assembly to determine whether President Bola Tinubu remains capable of effectively carrying out the responsibilities of his office, citing what it describes as growing confusion over presidential appointments and executive decisions.
In a statement released on Friday, the opposition party argued that recent developments within the Presidency have raised serious constitutional concerns about who is exercising executive authority.
According to the ADC, the controversy surrounding the Border Communities Development Agency (BCDA), where reports claim a presidential appointee continued to function in office despite an announced replacement, has raised questions about the implementation of presidential directives.
The party maintained that if the reports are accurate, the issue extends beyond a single appointment and reflects a broader challenge concerning executive authority and governance.
The ADC also referenced the controversy surrounding the alleged Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), describing it as an agency that reportedly operated within government despite questions over its legal status.
In addition, the opposition highlighted several policy reversals by the Federal Government, including the suspension of the Cybersecurity Levy and the withdrawal of the Expatriate Employment Levy following public criticism. According to the party, such developments create uncertainty for investors, public institutions, and citizens.
The ADC called on the National Assembly to examine what it described as constitutional questions regarding the exercise of presidential powers, including who authorises appointments and whether official presidential directives are being implemented as announced.
The party argued that these concerns touch on the integrity of executive authority and the stability of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
As of the time of this report, the Presidency had not issued an official response to the ADC’s latest statement.
