Several residents have been killed in a reprisal attack on communities in Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State following the alleged killing of an unarmed herder by a local vigilante member.
The affected communities — Abugi, Kuchinda and Mikugi in Kupa Kingdom — were attacked after tensions reportedly escalated following the death of the herder, who was allegedly shot on suspicion of cattle rustling.
The Kogi State Government has condemned the violence, describing the killings as “tragic, senseless and unacceptable,” while assuring residents that those responsible will be arrested and prosecuted.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo expressed condolences to the families of the victims and the people of Kupa Kingdom.
The government said preliminary investigations indicated that the crisis began after the alleged killing of the herder, which was followed by a retaliatory attack by armed individuals who invaded the communities and killed several residents.
Governor Ododo has directed security agencies to take full control of the affected areas, restore peace and ensure that all those involved in the violence are brought to justice.
The governor also ordered the arrest of the vigilante member accused of killing the herder, as well as suspects linked to the reprisal attack, including the leader of the Hybrid Vigilante Group who is alleged to have played a role in coordinating the assault.
The state government warned that anyone found responsible for either the killing of the herder or the subsequent attacks would face the full weight of the law, regardless of their background or affiliation.
Residents have been urged to remain calm, avoid further acts of retaliation and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could assist ongoing investigations.
The government said it is working with security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders to restore lasting peace and stability in Kupa Kingdom.
