The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of acting like a “terrorist organisation” following an alleged gun attack in Edo State targeting key opposition figures.
Those reportedly affected include former John Odigie-Oyegun, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Edo governorship candidate Olumide Akpata.
According to the Nigeria Police Force in Edo State, the attacks allegedly occurred at both the party secretariat and Odigie-Oyegun’s residence.
ADC Raises Alarm Over ‘Political Terror’
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC described the incident as a dangerous escalation of political intimidation.
The party claimed the attack was not isolated but part of a broader pattern of harassment against opposition figures across Nigeria.
ADC stated that the use of gunfire against political actors amounted to “acts of terrorism” that threaten democratic principles.
Governor Accused Of Inflammatory Remarks
The party also criticised Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, accusing him of making statements that allegedly heightened tensions.
ADC referenced previous comments attributed to the governor suggesting he could not guarantee Peter Obi’s safety if he visited the state without prior notice.
The party further alleged that the governor had made accusations linking ADC to cult activities and threatened to demolish properties belonging to opposition members.
ECOWAS Legal Action Threatened
ADC announced it is compiling evidence of what it calls “acts of political terrorism” by the APC and plans to submit a report to diplomatic missions and the ECOWAS Court of Justice.
The party warned that any harm to its leaders or supporters amid what it described as an “escalating climate of intimidation” would be blamed on those in power.
Call For Calm
Despite the tensions, ADC urged its members and supporters nationwide to remain calm, vigilant, and continue lawful political activities without fear.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to using legal and democratic means to protect its members and facilities.
