The Nigerian Senate has called on the Federal Government to discontinue the rehabilitation and reintegration programme for repentant Boko Haram members, citing the country’s worsening security situation and the continued rise in killings, kidnappings and attacks on both serving and retired military personnel.
The resolution was adopted during Tuesday’s plenary following a motion on the escalating wave of insecurity across the country. Lawmakers argued that Nigeria’s current security challenges require stronger and more decisive measures.
The motion, sponsored by Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Nigerian Army, was prompted by the reported abduction and death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, who reportedly died while in captivity after he and his wife were kidnapped in Katsina State.
Supporting the resolution, Senator Joseph Ikpea proposed ending the rehabilitation programme, while Senator Adams Oshiomhole argued that individuals involved in terrorism should face justice rather than receive rehabilitation, insisting that criminal acts must not be rewarded.
Leading the debate, Senator Yar’Adua described the nation’s security crisis as a “national emergency,” warning that terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and violent attacks continue to threaten lives and livelihoods across several parts of Nigeria.
Senator Osita Izunaso also urged security agencies to intensify efforts to arrest those responsible for the recent attacks, while Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro expressed concern that the growing insecurity has made travelling increasingly unsafe, even for public office holders.
The Senate’s position adds to growing calls for a review of the Federal Government’s approach to handling former insurgents. The debate also follows reports that billions of naira have been spent on rehabilitation and reintegration programmes in recent years despite the persistence of insurgent attacks.
The lawmakers maintained that strengthening national security and restoring public confidence should remain a top priority as the country continues to battle terrorism and other violent crimes.
