The Police Service Commission (PSC) has dismissed four senior police officers over allegations of gross misconduct, unprofessional conduct and acts considered unbecoming of public officers.
The decision was reached during the Commission’s plenary meeting in Abuja as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen discipline, accountability and professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force.
In addition to the dismissals, the PSC approved the demotion of 10 senior officers and ordered the compulsory retirement of two officers in what it described as the public interest.
According to the Commission, three Superintendents of Police were reduced to the rank of Deputy Superintendent, two Deputy Superintendents were demoted to Assistant Superintendent, while five Assistant Superintendents were reduced to the rank of Inspector.
The disciplinary actions also included severe reprimands for 10 officers, reprimands for five others, warning letters to three officers and a letter of advice issued to one officer. Seven officers were cleared after investigations found no evidence of misconduct against them.
Speaking after the meeting, PSC Chairman and retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Hashimu Salihu Argungu, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to enforcing discipline within the police force.
He stated that the Commission would not tolerate any form of misconduct and would continue to impose appropriate sanctions on erring officers, while also recognising and rewarding personnel who demonstrate professionalism, integrity and outstanding service.
The Police Service Commission said the disciplinary measures are aimed at promoting accountability, restoring public confidence and improving professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force.
