The United Nations Human Rights Office has strongly condemned racist remarks made by Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla against France captain Kylian Mbappé, describing the comments as unacceptable and warning that racism continues to threaten the integrity of global football.

The controversy followed France’s victory over Paraguay in the FIFA World Cup, where Mbappé scored the decisive penalty before becoming involved in a brief post-match altercation with Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill.
The situation escalated after Senator Amarilla posted a series of racist and offensive comments targeting Mbappé on social media. Her remarks sparked widespread international condemnation.
Responding on his verified X account, Mbappé described the senator’s comments as racist and said she was unfit to hold public office. Amarilla later demanded an apology from the French star while threatening legal action.
Meanwhile, FIFA confirmed it had launched an investigation into another alleged racist incident involving streamer IShowSpeed during the Argentina vs. Cabo Verde World Cup match played on July 3.
In a statement, FIFA reiterated that racism, hate and discrimination have no place in football or society, stressing that the FIFA World Cup is built on the values of unity, diversity and mutual respect.
The latest developments have renewed global concerns over racism in sports, with both the United Nations and FIFA calling for stronger action to eliminate racial discrimination on and off the field.
