The Edo State Police Command has arrested two men for allegedly staging a fake kidnapping in an attempt to extort ₦4 million from the family of one of the suspects.
According to the police, the suspects—Lucky Alabi (48) and Taiye Enahoro (37), both from Uneme Akpama Community in Edo State—were arrested by operatives of the Igarra Division on June 26, 2026, following intelligence that uncovered the alleged plot.
Preliminary investigations revealed that on June 23, Taiye Enahoro allegedly contacted Alabi’s relatives by phone, falsely claiming that Alabi had been kidnapped and demanding a ransom of ₦4 million for his release.
Police said swift investigative efforts exposed the alleged deception, leading to the arrest of both suspects before the ransom demand could succeed.
According to the Edo State Police Command, both men have allegedly confessed to their respective roles in the staged kidnapping and will be charged to court after investigations are completed.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, CP Monday Agbonika, warned members of the public against engaging in any form of criminal deception, including staging kidnappings to extort money from relatives.
He reiterated the Command’s commitment to ensuring that anyone involved in criminal activities is brought to justice and urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies.
The case remains under investigation.
