A group of United States-based Igbo military veterans has publicly declared support for IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, following his recent decision to dissolve the organisation’s third Directorate of State (DOS) and appoint a new leadership team.
The American Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID) stated that only Nnamdi Kanu possesses the authority to direct the affairs of IPOB and Radio Biafra, insisting that it will recognise and work exclusively with officials appointed by him.
In a statement released on Sunday, the group described Kanu’s restructuring of the movement as a legitimate exercise of his leadership powers and reaffirmed its support for the newly constituted fourth Directorate of State.
AVID also issued a strong warning to members of the dissolved leadership, cautioning against any form of violence, intimidation, or actions capable of destabilising the South-East region.
According to the veterans, any attempt to disrupt peace in Igboland would be viewed as a direct threat to the security and well-being of the people.
The development follows Kanu’s recent decision to dissolve the previous Directorate of State, citing allegations of poor leadership, internal divisions, and failure to adequately address the welfare of detained IPOB members.
The IPOB leader later announced the indefinite expulsion of ten senior members of the dissolved leadership, accusing them of undermining his legal battles and attempting to take control of the organisation for personal interests.
The latest move signals growing tensions within the pro-Biafra movement, as supporters and critics continue to debate the future direction of IPOB amid Kanu’s ongoing legal challenges.
