Former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has launched a scathing attack on Nigeria’s political class, alleging attempts to pressure and blackmail him into joining mainstream political parties after the 2023 elections.
Speaking during an interview on a radio programme in Ibadan, Sowore claimed that associates of Peter Obi approached him to align with the Labour Party, a move he said contradicted earlier criticisms of Nigeria’s political system.
“They told us these parties are structures of criminality, and now you want me to join them?” Sowore questioned, insisting he would not compromise his principles.
He further alleged that the pressure intensified in 2026, describing it as an attempt to coerce him into the same political structures he has consistently condemned.
Sowore also took aim at what he described as the constant movement of politicians across parties, referencing shifts involving the African Democratic Congress and the New Nigeria Peoples Party.
“How many parties do you want Sowore to join in his lifetime?” he asked, rejecting any form of political alignment he considers inconsistent with his stance.
In a sharp critique of governance, Sowore singled out Alex Otti and Seyi Makinde, describing their performances as “mediocre.”
According to him, the achievements of some Nigerian governors fall below acceptable standards, even when compared to local government officials in other African countries.
“The performance of some governors is not acceptable even for a councillor in Ghana,” he said.
Sowore also criticised what he described as a culture of celebrating basic responsibilities, such as payment of salaries and pensions, arguing that such actions are fundamental obligations of government, not achievements.
During a recent visit to Aba, Sowore said he was unimpressed with the level of development, particularly after touring Ariaria Market.
“I didn’t see anything spectacular,” he stated, adding that public officials must be held accountable to the standards they previously advocated.
He also alleged that political actors deploy influencers to shape public perception, insisting that no amount of propaganda can shield leaders from accountability.
Reaffirming his position, Sowore maintained that Nigeria’s problems stem from entrenched political systems and a lack of accountability, vowing to remain independent of what he repeatedly described as “corrupt structures.”
